Effect of human and sheep lung orientation on primary blast injury induced by single blast

چکیده
The intensity and type of trauma inflicted on a bod y by blast overpr essure are related to man y facto rs. Among them, body orientation. In order to study the effect of body orientation, detailed models of 2D horizontal slices of human and sh eep thoraces have been developed and va lidated with the limited data available in the open literature. The main goal o f this stud y is to verify if the injuries observed in the animal are trul y representative of human lung injuries for simple blast loadings at differen t orientations to the blast. In tota l, twelve blast directions were simulated for three diff erent blast injur y l evels based on the Bowe n curv es. The s heep and the hum an tors os were rota ted according to the ir vertical axis i n increments of 30 degree star ting from 0 degree through to 330 degree. From this study, it is predicted that the greatest reduction in lung primary blast injuries may be come from focusing on protecting the torso from -60 deg to +60 deg. Results showed also, that sheep are more d ependent to the blast wave duration and orientation.

Numerical modeling of primary thoracic trauma because of blast
Purpose: Since explosive blasts continue to cause casualties in both civil and military environments, there is a need for an understanding of the mechanisms of blast trauma at the human organ level, plus a more detailed predictive methodology. The primary goal of this research was to develop a finite element model capable of predicting primary blast injury to the lung so as to assist in the d...
متن کاملBiomechanical analysis of blast-induced traumatic brain injury
Purpose: Blast-induced traumatic brain injury (bTBI) is one of the causes of death or permanent invalidity which can occur unexpectedly in both military and civilian populations. This study set out to conduct a combined Eulerian-Lagrangian computational analysis of the interaction between a single planar blast wave and a human head in order to assess the extent of intracranial shock w...
متن کامل0919. Effect of catecholamine immediately after blast lung injury caused by laser-induced shock wave in a mouse model
Introduction The physical damage inflicted by blast waves is called primary blast injury, and lungs are vulnerable to blast waves [1]. Blast lung injuries (BLI) can be extremely critical during the super-acute phase, and hypotension is supposed to be the main cause of death (1), but its etiology has not been elucidated. Recent studies have demonstrated that hypotension is mediated by the absenc...
متن کاملBrain Response to Primary Blast Wave Using Validated Finite Element Models of Human Head and Advanced Combat Helmet
Blast-induced traumatic brain injury has emerged as a "signature injury" in combat casualty care. Present combat helmets are designed primarily to protect against ballistic and blunt impacts, but the current issue with helmets is protection concerning blasts. In order to delineate the blast wave attenuating capability of the Advanced Combat Helmet (ACH), a finite element (FE) study was undertak...
متن کاملSteroid-loaded Hemostatic Nanoparticles Alleviate Injury Progression after Blast Trauma
The purpose of this study was to investigate whether hemostatic dexamethasone-loaded nanoparticles (hDNP) functionalized with a peptide that binds with activated platelets could reduce cellular injury and improve functional outcomes in a model of blast trauma. Functionalized nanoparticles, or synthetic platelets, offer a wide variety of benefits and advantages compared to alternatives, such as ...
